A STUDENT-LED RESEARCH INITIATIVE

Solving public-system inefficiencies using research-based solutions

GSIPA identifies and builds solutions for gaps in public systems through rigorous, independent student research. Our first published project — the Canadian Surgical Wait-Time Index — is live now, with more research underway. All our findings are open, reproducible, and free to use.

About GSIPA

We do research
on issues that matter.

GSIPA is not a healthcare company. We are a group of student committed to using research that drives solutions in the public interest — through publishing and building potential solutions.

Our mission

Make public-system research more transparent, verifiable, and useful for everyone.

From surgical wait times to other under-examined public-system data, we start where data is public but insight is fragmented — and we publish work anyone can check, reuse, and build on.

Our Flagship ProjectLive

The Canadian Surgical Wait-Time Index

An index comparing surgical wait times across Canadian provinces — built entirely from public data, and now live for anyone to explore.

Evidence from public healthcare data — not private patient records
Problem

In Canada, patients can wait many months for planned surgeries such as hip and knee replacement. These waits vary widely by province, yet there is no single public measure that places these differences side by side. This means that some patient might be in a more critical condition than others, but still wait longer because of a longer waitline in their province.

What we built

A reproducible index comparing wait times across provinces, using data from CIHI, provincial health ministries, and Statistics Canada. The methodology is documented and the dataset is open for verification.

What our project produces
Public research report

Findings comparing the varying surgery wait times — presented clearly for experts and non-experts alike.

Open dataset

Credible data and cleaned files anyone can verify and reuse.

Documented methodology

Every step of our research explained so the work is reproducible.

Policy brief

A short summary for decision-makers and the public.

What we deliberately do not do
  • We do not collect private patient data — we use only public data.
  • We do not claim to prove the cause of variation — we measure patterns, not causes.
  • We do not recommend any specific commercial or political solution.
  • We do not provide medical advice or make clinical judgements.
Our approach

Rigorous, reproducible, and openly shared.

01

Collecting public data

We gather figures from CIHI, provincial health ministries, and Statistics Canada — recording the source for every number.

02

Cleaning and standardising

We document every adjustment and flag anything not directly comparable, so the process is transparent.

03

Analysing and building

We apply a clearly stated, reproducible method to compare wait times across provinces.

04

Independent review

Before publication, the work is reviewed by credible academic advisors — our key safeguard of quality.

05

Publishing openly

The report, dataset, and methodology are all made public so anyone can verify the work.
